I suppose this is just to let those who still drop by here occasionally that I’m still alive. I’m not sure whether I mentioned it in advance but the reason for my silence over the last few weeks (at least in part) has been that I’ve been on holiday with Lynne and Catherine. We just got back yesterday evening to find that England has been much hotter than the place where we’ve been. I’m sure this will in no way seem remarkable to a lot of you but, believe me, it’s astonishing where I live…the temperature outside the house yesterday was actually higher than inside the house! In this sun-forsaken northern part of Britain that is a truly remarkable occasion. When I left you I think I’d sensed another row blowing up with Jo, and sure enough it materialised. Several weeks after we’d fought over whether her status here had changed in the year of absence, and during which I thought we’d reached a point where she was expressing contentment, I returned from three days out of the office to find that not only had any such contentment evaporated but she’d been seeking advice from a government department on the situation. So we had the row. And we came to another amicable agreement and eventually I worked out that in the three intervening days she’d had another job approach and there were emotions tied up in working out what to do about it.
I think we’re OK at the moment – we exchanged mail yesterday as soon as I got back. But I’m not going to be deluded into thinking that this fragility is healed. It’s going to be like this from here on I suspect.
I hate it when she’s hurting.
Oh – by the way – yesterday was Lynne and my silver wedding anniversary. She remembered!
