An example of the sort of thing I haven’t had to worry about for months.I came back from lunch today to find a missed call on my office phone – a mobile number I didn’t recognise. Assuming it was someone who wanted to speak to me – fair enough? – I called it back but it just rang out.
About ten minutes later my phone rang again – this time either the caller withheld their number or it was from one of those exchanges that does that automatically. I picked it up, said my name as I always do to answer the phone. There was three or four seconds of silence, but enough background noise to know it wasn’t just dead. And then the phone was hung up.
Two possibly unconnected incidents. But my mind starts rushing into – maybe the unrecognised number was Jo’s new mobile (she said she’d given the old one to her mother). Maybe she called at lunchtime when Dave wasn’t about (she promised to call me yesterday and I haven’t heard from her).
Maybe he came home and checked who’d she’d been calling. And then I confirmed it by answering with my name.
And maybe she’s suffering because of that.
